From prototype to an international success in just four years

We interview Mindmore's CEO about all the things that have happened since Prototype helped the company build a prototype for cognitive testing fours years ago

It all started with a joint prototyping project (as part of Prototyp's Software Summers talent program) and has now grown to a quickly growing startup, 40 clients (mostly clinics) and advanced plans to expand to new markets.

The digital health tech startup Mindmore has developed a platform that democratizes testing for those who suffer from conditions causing cognitive impairment. The digital tool saves up time and resources for the care provider by generating a broad and deep cognitive patient profile, and thus by enabling a better understanding for the patient and the care journey.

In recent years, new research has indicated that cognition is affected by diseases where we previously knew less about their cognitive impact, now we also know more about how the brain is affected by these diseases. Some of the patient populations affected are: depression, stress-related mental illness such as fatigue, burnout, psychiatric illness, ADHD.

Four years ago Prototyp developer Axel Ekwall joined the team to build a prototype over the summer. The goal was to create a digital version of existing analog tests, in close collaboration with a postdoc at Karolinska Institutet, current clients and end-users (a philosophy that is at the core of Prototyp). "Being part of the team from day one made me feel like an equal team member, rather than a consultant. Prototyp was highly involved in business- and product development, as well as QA. I could also include the work and the tests in my thesis, which was great.", says Axel.

Mindmore's CEO and co-founder Sara Wallén adds: "We didn't have the right tech competence in-house back then, which made the tech partnership with Prototyp crucial for our initial development and growth. Prototyp was our "allt-i-allo" - they did a little bit of everything, and taught us how to scale digital products. Only features that are necessary are added, step by step."

In 2019 Mindmore built a tech team with external developers, but since the end of 2020 the tech team is fully in-house and includes a CTO and CPO. "This past year, we have focused on making the Mindmore platform even better and safer. We have used pseudonymised data (a unique code instead of personal data) from the start, but we are adding two-step-verification and logging to make the data even more protected. We are also improving the product, of course. How the tests are conducted and the results are presented. The plan is to reach 80 clients before the end of 2021, which makes scaling and adjustments much more crucial.", explains CPO Martin Löfbom.
